This plant pot is an adaptation of an ancient method of irrigation called “OLLA” that is thought to have originated in Africa 4,000 years ago.
It uses the porous nature of clay pots to allow osmotic pressure to suck the water into the soil where it is needed.
The unglazed clay of the pot only releases water upon demand, when it senses negative pressure (suction). It doesn’t just seep out continuously. This negative pressure is caused by plants. When plant roots use the water, removing it from the soil, negative pressure is created. The interaction between the plant and the pot is what makes it so efficient.
This plant pot is part of the PezEstudio project Ciudad Biótica Agroplaza , shown in the Spanish Pavilion Uncertainty 2021, Biennale Architettura, Venice.

The soil only seeps out the water when is dry
10 times more efficient than surface irrigation
Plant roots pull moisture only when needed, never wasting a single drop
Saves up to 70% of your garden water use
Once the soil is wet the clay pot stops seeping
